Fred was aged 1 year at the time of the 1901 census, and lived in New Street, Lydd with his parents and siblings. He was later in business with his brother Edgar, running a butcher's shop in Lydd [2]. Lilian Browning was employed in the shop as a cashier, and she became Fred's wife [2].

Fred's mother was still living in Lydd after the war, and Charlie and Gladys Fagg moved in with her as lodgers, partly to give her company and support. She was known to the Faggs as Aunt Emm. When she died, Gladys & Charlie bought the house, and lived there until they moved from Lydd.
