Stephen Dungate was born
in 1921 to Stephen and Maud Dungate. As a small child he was
nicknamed 'Digger', and this name stayed with him throughout his
life. In 1940 he joined the Royal Air Force on air-sea rescue
boats, and in 1942 was posted to Ceylon. In 1944 he moved on to
Burma, where he saw the end of the war.
In 1946, Dig was married to Vera
Wiltshire, and they had two daughters.
