Anne Fletcher was born in the parish of
Kilfinan, on the eastern shore of Loch Fyne, in 1798. In 1823 or 1824, she gave
birth to her daughter Jean, whose natural father was George McFarlane, the 3rd
Laird of Auchrossan. Auchrossan was (and still is) an estate just south of
Kilfinan. George died in 1827 and Anne adopted his name, though it does not seem
that they ever legally married. Anne seems to have also used the name Agnes,
which appeared on her daughter's death certificate, and also as the name of her
eldest grand-daughter. (A family's eldest daughter was almost always named after
her paternal grandmother.)
