Jane was born in 1824 to George MacFarlane
and Anne or Agnes Fletcher, in the parish of Kilfinan, Argyll.[4][6]. In 1841, she was in service at Largiemore farm, near
Otter Ferry, which had been the home of her father's uncle George until his
death in 1828[1]. At the time of her marriage in 1845, Jane was resident in
the parish of Kilmodan [5]. By 1847, she was living in Greenock [2]. As was common in Scotland at that time, her name was
written both as Jane and Jean during her life.
In April 1877, Jane
McKechnie died aged 53 of chronic bronchitis [2].
