May was born in Lurgashall, near Midhurst in Hampshire to George and Polly Simpson [3]. By 1910, she was in service with the Nix family at Tilgate House south of Crawley [2]. The family had a second house near Hawick [2], in the Scottish borders. In 1914 she married Phillip Wiltshire, a sailor with the Royal Navy. They had four children between 1914 and 1920.
