Margaret was born in about 1833 in Leith, the sea-port of Edinburgh. In about 1853, she married Colin Gardner, a railwayman. Her husband's job took them to Edinburgh, Carlisle, Glasgow, Carstairs and Stirling over a 15 year period, during which they had 7 children.

In 1879 Margaret's husband was tragically killed in an accident at work. Margaret died four years later, aged about 50.
