Robert Peden was born in Scotland (but
not Argyllshire) in about 1770 [1]. A Robert Peden was born in 1768 in Auchinleck, a
coal-mining town in Ayrshire [2], and it is possible that this Robert Peden moved to the
Campbeltown Colliery as an experienced collier, for Peden does not appear to be
a Kintyre name before the mid 1790s.
In about 1795, Robert married Mary McGilvray in the
Campbeltown district. About 1809 he
remarried to Mary Bryan.
In 1841 at the age of 70, Robert was a coal-miner
and lived at Drumlemble, between Machrihanish and Campbeltown.
