Ann was born in about 1854 in Keith, Banffshire to James and Ann Forsyth. In 1874 she married James Wallace, a print compositor, and by 1875 they were living in Campbeltown, Argyll, where her first two children were born. Some time between 1877 and 1880 they moved to Greenock, and they were still there in 1901.

Ann signed her name on her marriage certificate as Annie, so she was probably Annie to her friends & family.
