Neil was born in about
1878 to William and Maggie McKechnie. By 1901 he was employed as
a plumber[3], an occupation he retained
throughout his life[4,
5]. In 1912 he married
Margaret Cook, a school teacher and the daughter of a sea captain[4]. They had at least one child, William, who
in 1950 lived at 13 Craigmuschat Road, Gourock[5].
