William was born near
Lochgilphead about 1846, the youngest son of John and Flora
McKechnie[1]. By 1873, he was employed as a
ship's carpenter and was living in Greenock[5]. In 1873 William married Maggie Ann,
daughter of Neil McTaggart, a river passenger boat pilot[5]. By 1881, they were living at 51 Holmscroft
Street in Greenock with their three children, but on census night
William was away from home[2].
William's wife Maggie died
in 1883[6], and in 1888 he remarried in
Lochgilphead to Mary Sinclair[5]. By 1891 they lived in Gourock[3], and in 1901 they were still there[4]. In 1903 he was paralysed (possibly a
stroke?) and on 29th March 1907 he died at home in Gourock[6].
