In
1841 and 1851 Joseph was employed as a labourer and lived
on the Old Dover Road in the St Mary Bredin parish of Canterbury
with his wife Ann and his two sons[1]. In
1861, he
lived with this wife Ann on the Old Dover Road, Canterbury, in Ivy House, which
appears to be a large house divided into flats[2].
By
1871, Joseph's
wife had died and he was living in the Canterbury
Union Workhouse in Nunnery Fields, described as a farm labourer[3].
In 1881, Joseph was still in
the Union workhouse, described as a Hay Trusser (Pauper), aged 82[4]. He died there in 1889[6].
