James Rollo was born at
Kinnoul, in the north-eastern outskirts of Perth, to John and
Annie Rollo. He trained as a blacksmith and attained the skill of
a journeyman. He worked for at least part of his career for the
railway, being described at various times as blacksmith (journeyman),
blacksmith in railway works, engine fitter, and engineer. In 1838
he married Betsy Chistie, and over the following 22 years they
had 9 children. Betsy died in 1889.
After the death of his
wife Betsy, James married again to Janet Low (or Marshall - both
names were registered. His death certificate gives these two
names and also a third, Ballingall!)
James died of old age in
1906 at the age of 89.
