Maria was born in 1843at Kurnaul (Kurnool) in central southern India while her father John Cart was serving as a soldier.
By 1865 Maria was in service in Womenswold, where she met and married James Fagg, a widower working as an agricultural labourer in the same village. Together they had nine children, as well as bringing up at least one child from James's previous marriage.
Maria died in 1901 at the age of 57, at Upper Hardres near Canterbury. Her death was reported by her son W. Fagg (may have been Walter or William), and the cause given as Morbus Cordis. A memorial card was printed, probably for her funeral.
