James Fagg was born in
Womenswold, near Canterbury, about 1829. Like many of his
contemporaries, his education did not extend to the skills of
writing; he probably worked on a farm from childhood, and as an
adult he continued as a farm labourer. He married Ann Belsey in
about 1851, and they had at least one daughter. About 1860 his
wife Ann died, leaving him a widower.
In 1865 James married
Maria Cart. At the time of the census in 1871 they lived in Womenswold village with their
first three children, James's daughter Jane and grandson John
from his first marriage, his mother, and his sister Caroline and
her son. By 1881 they had moved to The Street, Kingston
where they lived with their eight children[5]. In 1901 they lived at Lynsore Bottom, Upper Hardres with their son Walter, and by 1903
his address was given in his son's army pay book as Westwood,
Kingstone[10].
James died in the first quarter of 1904.
