Henry Dungate was born at 4 St Ann's Road, Lambeth in March 1844 [15]. In 1861 at the age of 17, he had started work and was living with his parents and siblings at 8 Johns Place, Lambeth. He later ran a business as a scale maker (weights and measures). He married Mary Cranfield at Bethnal Green in early 1866. In 1881 he lived with his wife Mary and six children at 54 Picton Street, Camberwell [4].

By 1891, Henry and his family had moved to 30 Waterloo Street, Camberwell[5] (on the south side of the street, which is now part of Elmington Road). Here Henry set up a Scale Maker's shop, and b 1901 his son Henry A. Dungate had joined the business[6]. His son William was also a scale maker by 1901, but on census night was a patient in Guy's hospital[6].

Some time before 1891, Henry's wife Mary died, and by 1897 he had remarried to Alice[6].

Between 1905 and 1906, the premises of Henry Dungate & sons, Scale Makers, moved to 216 Camberwell Road in Camberwell[20]. In 1913, Henry was still living at this address[30].
