John Union was born in
Ireland, and came to Greenock with his parents in about 1856[1],
[3]. In 1875 he was a journeyman
iron-moulder and married Jesse Stuart, but sadly she died in 1877 of phthisis (tuberculosis). In 1879 he remarried to
Margaret Alexander, a widow with two children. By 1881 he lived
in same close (13 Crescent Street) as sister Jane Peden [3]. He remained in the same trade in 1891 and
1901, when he and his family lived in Belville Street [4],[5].
In 1902, John emigrated to America on the SS Columbia,
arriving at Ellis Island, New York from Glasgow on 13.10.1902.
His son William Union had arrived on the SS Laurentian on 9.7.1902.
On 5.2.1903 he was joined by his wife Maggie and children Samuel
(22), Nimmo (17), Charles (11), and Wilford (10). Some time
between then and 1905, they moved to Newport News in Virginia [9].
