John Peden was born in
1857 or early 1858 in Ireland [1]. He lived for most of his life in Greenock,
and was employed in one of the many sugar-houses in the town. In
1878 he married Jane Union [4], and at the time of the 1881 census they
lived at 13 Crescent Street in Greenock with their first two
children. By 1885 they were living at 1 Belleville Street, in the
east end of Greenock; the 1891 census gives their address as
number 11 and the 1901 census as number 13. They later moved to
number 8, where John stayed for the rest of his life. John's
grandson John McKechnie remembers him in his later years.
John died in his bed on 23rd
January 1931, aged 73 [5].
